Preserving the nation's home-grown produce for over 150 years, the original Kilner jar was invented in the mid-19th century by John Kilner and the design has changed little since.
Kilner jars were originally made with a glass plug which had a rubber seal, which was kept in place with a metal screw-top lid. Today, is has been replaced with a rubber-rimmed metal seal and a separate screw-top lid, but the airtight qualities - allowing the contents to stay fresh for months, if not years - have not been compromised.
The clip-top Kilner jar with the metal hinge was invented by John's grandson, Caleb Kilner, who was the highly respected head of the Kilner Brothers Glassworks in Conisborough, Yorkshire and who died in 1920.
Today, the Kilner brand is owned by Ravenhead Glass, part of the Liverpool-based Rayware group, who are proud to make the jars to the same high standards that they had become so well known for. There are many cheaper imitations around, but beware of the weight and quality of the glass they use. Your home-made preserves deserve the best.
