You need to take him to the vet to have his teeth checked, there's no way auornd it. If he already has bad enough teeth for there to be a strong odour it is likely that he will need a dental cleaning.From there you can do some maintenance things to keep his mouth healthy. Brushing is always the best, but not always practical with cats. One of mine will let me brush with a poultry flavoured pet toothpaste. The others are happy with the occasional greenies.One of the easiest, and best, things to do is to put him on dental diet. These are foods that are specifically designed to help minimize tartar and plaque build up. I've used two different brands with my cats before and they've both worked quite well. One was Science Diet t/d and the other was MediCal Dental.References :
